Our History

Project SHARE has a rich history. In November 1984, a group of clergy and lay people convened to discuss the problem of food insecurity in Carlisle. There were many small food pantries, but they did not coordinate with each other. This discussion led to the creation of Project SHARE.

While programs have been added over the years and distribution models have changed, Project SHARE stays true to its mission of reducing food insecurity in the greater Carlisle area, with the vision of “Nourishing Our Community…Awakening Hope.”

1985

Project SHARE was founded in January by the Carlisle Council of Churches (now called the Carlisle Area Religious Council), to create a centralized food distribution center in Carlisle.

Elaine Livas was selected as Project SHARE’s leader. At the first distribution, 72 families were served pre-packed food bags.

1992

Project SHARE outgrew its original location and moved to Stock Hall in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

2002

Outgrowing the space in Stock Hall, Project SHARE moved into a 10,000-square-foot warehouse owned by Dickinson College, on N. Orange St., Carlisle, PA 17013.

Today, Project SHARE occupies 23,000 square feet and pays $1 per year in rent, thanks to the generosity of Dickinson College.

2006

Project SHARE purchased the Farmstand property, located at the corner of Pitt and Lincoln streets in Carlisle.

Farmstand provides a weekly opportunity for neighbors in need to pick up fresh fruits, vegetables, bread, milk and eggs.

2014

Responding to the increase in hunger among children during the summer, Project SHARE launched Lunch and Learn, which has evolved into the current Summer Feeding 4 Kids.

While the model of distribution has changed over the years, Project SHARE is committed to providing nourishing, nutritious meals when school is out of session.

2020

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Project SHARE adapted to a strictly drive-thru model keeping the health and safety of volunteers, staff and clients in mind.

2021

Reimagining how to provide for neighbors in need, Project SHARE implemented a full Client Choice pantry in September. The pantry distribution room was remodeled to resemble a grocery store, empowering clients with choice.

2025

Project SHARE celebrates serving the community for 40 years and continuing the vision of “Nourishing Our Community…Awakening Hope!”
